Voyage through life on the waters with the Australian Sailing Museum.
A major feature of the new museum is the Rolly Tasker Collection, the first and only complete set of fine art illustrations of all of the yachts that have sailed for the America's Cup through its history. It includes the schooner America, whose victory off Cowes was the start of it all, and two yachts to contest the 1995 defence in San Diego; Black Magic 1995 and Young America 1995. The display also includes a scale model of each challenger and defender of the America's Cup since 1851, the history of the America's Cup, and life size wax figures of famous skippers, owners, architects, and commodores.
This private collection of art has been a passion of Rolly Tasker's since 1943 when he first began researching the history of the America's Cup and Australian sailing. Since then it has grown year-by-year to reach the standard of perfection required to house such a display.
The museum collection houses a scale model of classes of yachts to reach Fleet status in Australia since 1861, the history of sailing in Australia through the decades including the early skippers and their crew, the sailing Hall of Fame, sailing Olympic hero's, marine art featuring such famous artists such as America's John Mecray, John Stobard, Willard Bond, an alfresco restaurant, museum store and much more.
Open Daily 9am - 5pm.
The Australian Sailing Museum is one tourist attraction you won't want to miss.
Our museum houses a comprehensive display ofAustralian and America's Cup models, the history of Australian sailing from the 1800s, marine art and architecture, wax figures of sailing icons (e.g. Dennis Conner and Sir Thomas Lipton), and pennants. An intersting side story here is the wax figure of Alan Bond was stolen before it could be installed in the museum. It mysteriously disapeared while being moved from the workshop where it was created to the museum. Who would want a life size wax figure of Alan Bond we'll leave up to you to guess?
Our Museum complex also houses the Penninsula Art Gallery that sells limited edition prints, the Boardwalk Cafe and Rolly Tasker Sails - Australia that will offer sails made by Rolly. We also have a gift shop.
